Tulle (the couturier’s fabric of choice for creating princess gowns) was papped on the most influential street-style icons last year, furthering its frothy fame on the AW16 catwalks and scheduled to fly of the shelves come spring. Maria Grazia Chiuri’s exquisite SS17 collection for Christian Dior gave us the most fabulous validation that this ladylike fabric is no longer restricted to the red carpet, ballerinas and Walt Disney. Tulle has found its place in our everyday wardrobes and I couldn’t be happier about the integration! Other designers backing the fabrics wearability include; Molly Goddard, who’s brand was built on the fabric; and Rochas who created charming cocktail dresses in an array of sherbet colours that are perfect for sweet summer evenings.
The question is, how can we introduce this airy fabric into our wardrobes for spring? I’ve put together 5 ways to style-up this frothy fabric in the unpredictable English weather. What will your tulle styling strategy be?
NO.1 – CINDERELLA WILL GO TO THE BALL
Tulle pairs stunningly with a fitted or slightly oversized piece of knitwear. I love an understated approach towards evening-wear and this combination, no matter how dramatic the tulle, remains elegantly paired down. This look also lends itself nicely to an oversized blazer being tossed over the shoulders, should you need an extra layer of warmth. SKIRT, Needle & Thread, £ 120. JUMPER, Markus Lupfer, £315. SHOES. Topshop, £56. EARRINGS, Lara Gravestock, £33.
NO.2 – DECODING SMART/CASUAL
An ankle grazing tulle skirt is perfect for any daytime occasion that dictates the ‘smart/casual’ dress code. Don’t be afraid to layer up this style, pair with an interesting denim jean and a court shoe to create an effortlessly dressed up look.
SKIRT, Philosophy Di Lorenzo Serafini, £485. SHOES, Beyond Skin, £99 (vegan). TOP, Warehouse, £20. BAG, Angela Roi, $145 (vegan). JEANS, Topshop, £59.
NO.3 – YOU CAN BE A PRINCESS AT THE OFFICE
Tulle is often thought of as a ‘princess’ fabric, therefore it’s deemed as pretty anti-workwear. But on the contrary, when paired with a chic longline turtleneck, power blazer and a pair of block heels, the tulle skirt will take your working wardrobe to new heights. Top top: When styling a more extravagant fabric or texture for the office, make sure to keep your colour palate neutral.
SKIRT, Simone Rocha, £695. POLO-NECK, J.Crew, £230. DUSTER COAT, Topshop, £59. SHOES, Rafa, $365 (vegan). BAG, Freedom of Animals, $260 (vegan)
NO.4 – THE WEEKENDER
How to wear tulle in a casual fashion? Pair a sheer tulle top over your favourite denim jeans and underneath your beloved Breton striped jumper. Needless to say that Topshop have already cottoned on to this trend, selling jeans with tulle attached to the waistline. However, despite this being a great idea in theory, I think that purchasing individual items will give your pieces longevity, plus you can style them up in various ways.
BAG, Okhtien, £580 @ Wolr & Badger. SHOES, Topshop, £56. JEANS, Topshop, £42. TOP, Simone Rocha, £395. JUMPER, Uniqlo, £24.90.
